In Ontario, all people, including children and teens, are entitled to confidentiality in therapy sessions. This means that what you or your child share with their therapist is private. Social workers respect your child’s right to privacy while also keeping them safe.

There are a few important exceptions, known as the “limits of confidentiality.” A therapist must share information with the appropriate parties if:

  • There is a risk of serious harm to your child or someone else.

  • There is a concern that a child is being abused or neglected.

  • A court requires access to therapy records.

Outside of these situations, therapists keep the content of sessions private. When appropriate, therapists may provide parents or guardians with general updates about progress, coping skills, or engagement, without sharing specific details from conversations.
